Pitch Report | Ian Bishop and Sunil Gavaskar: "It looks a glorious evening. The square is a little bit used, but the outfield looks superb. Dimensions of the ground aren't huge. We are the centre of the square - 61 metres (square) either side and 75 metres down the ground. A high six-hitting ground. The first game played here, we saw a number of seam bowlers taking pace off the ball. Maybe that's something faster bowlers may go to today. It looks interesting. It's still a good pitch, it's hard but there are areas over here - when you look at the good length spots, some of these cracks over here, when you touch, they are a little bit loose. If the spinners keep landing the ball over here, it's going to come apart a little bit and get you a little more turn. We hope there'll be no dew interrupting."
Kolkata kick-started their campaign with a nervy 4-win against SRH in a high-scoring cliffhanger. Four of their top five batters perished for single-digits and the two-time champions still managed to post a total in excess of 200, thanks to a sensible fifty from Salt and Dre Russ's explosive half-ton. With the ball, Sunil Narine - the veteran - was at his miserly best but the other bowlers were taken to the cleaners. A 22-year-old, named Harshit Rana, stepped up and bowled a brilliant final over under tremendous pressure
Bengaluru's campaign started with a loss against the reigning champions but they got off the mark with a 4-run victory against Punjab Kings. A lot of eyebrows were raised when they fielded just four frontline bowlers and relied on Green and Maxwell for the fifth bowler's quota. However, that eventually became a superb move with the Impact Sub (extra batter) making a notable contribution. On a not-a-typical Chinnaswamy track, their bowlers did a good job to restrict their opponents to 176 with Joseph, Green and Siraj using the hard lengths. Yash Dayal has bowled beautifully with the new ball in both the matches. Maxwell and Green have flopped with the bat in both the matches. Kohli put on an exhibition against Punjab but RCB still needed cameos from DK and Lomror to take them home. They possess an enviable batting line-up with most of them capable of single-handedly winning matches for their team. Can Faf and Co. win two on the bounce?

What better fixture to closely follow a game that has redefined the limits of what's possible than the one that opened that particular window of imagination 16 years ago. Pore through RCB-KKR history or simply glance over the two squads and there is promise of big runs, even though the freshly-prepared surfaces at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium may not be at their conducive best just yet to help reclaim the IPL record lost to Hyderabad two nights ago.
Klaasen & Co. are the talk of the tournament in the first week of IPL 2024 but the Knight Riders did outhit them in Kolkata. They'll have reason to believe, with a little assistance from the top order, there's plenty more where that came from. That said, RCB were particularly canny with the ball in their win over Punjab Kings and made good use of a slightly tacky surface with their tall, hit-the-deck bowlers. And if there is a chink in KKR's band of heavy hitters, it is that a few of them could be susceptible to the short ball.
Watch out also for a battle of dexterity within the larger framework of this context. KKR have as many as four left-handers in their top six while RCB have a right-heavy top-order. And therefore Glenn Maxwell, whose big batting show is awaited in the competition, may just end up having an equally important role to play in the other innings as one of two all-rounder's in a six-man attack.
When: Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2024, March 29, 19:30 IST
Where: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
What to expect: The toss-winning captain opting to chase. The pitch for this particular game is to the left [from the pavilion end] of the one used for the Punjab game. Visually too, the pitch looked different on the eve of the match with the patchy grass cover that marked the pitch for the opener not seen. The expectation is that it should play truer than the one used four nights ago, which saw a substantial 20-run dip from last year's average venue score of 196.
Head to Head: RCB 14 - 18 KKR. The Knight Riders did the double over RCB last season, scoring 200 on each occasion. In fact, RCB have not beaten KKR on their home turf since 2015.
Team Watch:
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Injury/Availability: RCB have a clean bill of health to report.
Tactics & Matchups: Faf du Plessis and Andy Flower took a bold call in the first game to field just the four frontline bowlers and got five overs out of their two overseas allrounders. This meant they could field both Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik in the XI and throw in another batter, Mahipal Lomror, as an 'Impact Sub' to bolster batting depth. Batting coach Neil Mckenzie confirmed that it is a line of thinking that will continue as RCB look to reassure their power players to take positive options knowing there's enough batting to come.
Injury/Availability: No injury concerns for KKR either.
Tactics & Matchups: There was some turn on offer in Bengaluru's opening game but KKR will have to consider if their three-card trick of Narine+Varun+Suyash is worth the risk at Chinnaswamy. Varun Chakravarthy was Player of the Match last time at this venue while Sunil Narine holds a fantastic head-to-head record against both Virat Kohli [106 off 106, 4 dismissals] and Faf du Plessis [37 off 47, 1 dismissal].
- Rinku Singh strikes at 273.1 in overs 19 and 20 in all T20s since 2023. The last time he faced Yash Dayal, he hit five sixes to chase down 28 from the final 5 balls of the match.
- Mohammed Siraj has dismissed Andre Russell twice and conceded a run-a-ball 22 to the big-hitting all-rounder in their match-up
- Mitchell Starc returns to the place where he started his IPL career. In the ten matches Starc played here, he had an ER of 7.66 while the other pacers in those ten games conceded at 9.47
What they said:
"At the moment I have four packs [abs] so working on the next two. Definitely being leaner and lighter, I just think it's working for my body and shows in my performance as well. I set myself a goal because I like to watch the UFC fighters. To see those guys looking strong and lean is a motivation for me as well. I know it's gonna help in my cricket... bowling, fielding and also in my batting. I use it as a platform to say that I want to look like that. If I don't, it's still fine. I'll be getting stronger and I'll be making sure that I'm on the cricket field as long as possible and keep doing all these amazing things that I've been doing." - Andre Russell on the progress he's made after vowing to look like a UFC fighter for the T20 World Cup
